Hereford Cathedral – Ordered Universe to lead study day

Hereford

Brian Tanner, Giles Gasper and David Thomson will be leading a 3 hour workshop at Hereford Cathedral this coming Saturday, 8th February, on Grosseteste, the Ordered Universe, and our collaborative history of science.

Robert Grosseteste and how modern physics was born at Hereford

The day will explore Grosseteste’s Hereford connections: from his appointment to the household of bishop William de Vere (c.1195-98) to the evidence for his later activities in the diocese. And we’ll present Grosseteste’s engagement with natural phenomena, his scientific thought, and run a collaborative reading session with Grosseteste’s two earliest treatises, On the Liberal Arts (with strong claim to a Hereford origin or at least inspiration) and On the Generation of Sounds. We’re very excited to be running this event in Hereford, in the city that Grosseteste knew so well, and in the county which, for at least two members of the team, is home. Our grateful thanks go to the Revd Canon Chris Pullin and the events team at the Cathedral, and to Dr Rosemary Firman, Cathedral librarian for access to manuscripts for consultation.
